John Trivett Nettleship was born in Kettering, Northants. on February 11th 1841. He gave up a career in the law to become an art student, studying at Heatherley's art school and at the Slade. During the 1870s he was part of the group of artists called 'The Brotherhood', of which the other members were John Butler Yeats, George Wilson and Edwin John Ellis.
